Criminal law
Whether you are a suspect or a victim, criminal proceedings move fast and their consequences are serious. Getting advice from the outset often changes the course of a case.
If you are suspected or accused
- Police custody (garde à vue) and voluntary interviews (audition libre): confidential consultation, presence during interviews, written observations.
- Immediate trial (comparution immédiate): preparing the defence at short notice, requesting an adjournment, guarantees of appearance.
- Criminal court (tribunal correctionnel) and police court (tribunal de police): review of the case file, oral submissions, adjustment of sentence.
- Judicial investigation (instruction): assistance during questioning, requests for investigative steps, appeals before the investigating chamber (chambre de l’instruction).
If you are a victim
- Complaint: drafting a precise, well-documented complaint, complaint with a civil party claim (plainte avec constitution de partie civile).
- Hearing: joining the proceedings as a civil party, assessing and arguing your losses.
- Compensation: enforcing the judgment, referral to the Crime Victims Compensation Commission (CIVI) where possible.
You can ask for the assistance of a lawyer from the very start of police custody (garde à vue), and choose your lawyer. A relative can also contact me directly on +33 7 70 59 70 59.

Frequently asked questions
Can I be assisted by a lawyer in police custody?
Yes, from the very start of the measure. The lawyer speaks with you confidentially for thirty minutes, then may attend your interviews and confrontations and submit written observations.
What is an immediate trial (comparution immédiate)?
It is a fast-track procedure: the person is tried by the criminal court straight after police custody. They may agree to be tried the same day or ask for time to prepare their defence; the court then decides on their situation until the hearing.
I am a victim: how can I obtain compensation?
By joining the proceedings as a civil party, you can ask the court to award damages for all your losses. For certain offences, the Crime Victims Compensation Commission (CIVI) can compensate you even if the offender is insolvent or unknown.
I do not speak French well: am I entitled to an interpreter?
Yes, throughout the criminal proceedings. With me, you can also prepare your defence directly in English or Russian.
